Electric Fireplaces in Dartmouth-Nova Scotia

Installing an electric fireplace is a big commitment. It alters the feel and look of your room and, often, sitting next to it will become a favourite activity in the house. But, before you start reclining next to your warm, crackling fireplace, there are a few things you should know about the electric versions. We answer your most common questions below.

How Do Electric Fireplaces Work?

Electric fireplaces don’t use real flames, so how do they work? The fireplace has LED lights in them, which, with the help of some refractors, create the flickering pattern that mimics the look of a real flame. They also have a heating panel which produces some of the heat that you’d expect from any fireplace. It isn’t enough to heat your home, but it does make for a warm and comfortable glow.

Is it Expensive to Run an Electric Fireplace?

This really depends on the energy prices in your area and how often you are running the electric fireplace. As long as you don’t expect the fireplace to heat your home, it’s an efficient unit which doesn’t take too much energy to run. There is a simple heater, plus a fan and, of course, the LED lighting.

The energy output of electric fireplaces averages around 4,000 BTUs of heat, which is typically only enough for one large room.

Does an Electric Fireplace Need to be Vented?

No, electric fireplaces do not need to be vented. Like other electronics, they do not produce exhaust, so they do not need a vent to take that exhaust out of your home. This is convenient because it makes the fireplace more efficient and less dangerous. In a gas or wood fireplace, some of the heat generated is always lost through the exhaust.

An electric fireplace will not create the smoky smell that wood-burning fireplaces do. For some, that’s a disappointment. But it’s also a good thing, as you will not be exposed to the harm of either wood smoke or gas exhaust from an electric fireplace. It also means that the fireplace does not need to be cleaned or have its chimney swept.

What are the Types of Electric Fireplaces?

There are three main types of electric fireplaces:

  • Inserts: These fireplaces are called inserts because you put them into an old hearth where you had a wood burning or a gas fireplace. They keep the traditional look but add modern convenience.
  • Standalone: These do not have to be installed into a wall. Instead, you can place these electric fireplaces wherever you need them. They have heaters and even a mantel built-in.
  • Custom: There are also custom options which can be built into your wall, your furniture, or placed in any spot in your home where you’d like a fireplace.
