How to Store Your Patio Furniture Properly

As summer winds down, Halifax patios face cooler nights, more frequent showers, and the odd gusty system off the Atlantic. Smart, timely storage protects your patio furniture from moisture, mildew, and wind while keeping part of your space usable into the shoulder season. Use this concise, locally minded plan to button things up before true Nova Scotia fall sets in.

When to Start Packing Up Patio Furniture

Aim for a dry 24–48-hour window in late September or early October so frames and fabrics can air out fully before covering. Shorter days mean slower drying, so plan your deep-clean and cover-up for a stretch without rain or heavy dew.

How to Clean and Dry by Material

Powder-Coated Aluminum/Steel

Wash with pH-neutral soap and a soft cloth; rinse well. Touch up nicks to keep salt air from creeping under the finish. Dry completely.

Teak & Other Hardwoods

Brush with mild cleaner; avoid aggressive sanding. Let wood dry thoroughly before optional oiling for colour (not required for durability).

Resin Wicker & HDPE

Vacuum out grit with a brush attachment, then wash gently. Abrasives dull the surface; skip them. Pat dry; allow airflow time.

Glass/Stone Tabletops

Degrease, rinse, and dry. Seal porous stone per manufacturer guidance before covering.

Covers That Work in Coastal Weather

Choose breathable, fitted covers with tie-downs and vent panels. Elevate feet slightly on rubber pads so air can circulate and runoff escapes. Avoid shrink-wraps or tarps that trap condensation and encourage mildew.

Get a dedicated BBQ or grill cover and keep it stored under a structure if possible (roof overhang, porch, etc). Detach gas lines or propane tanks as well!

Cushion, Rug & Textile Storage

Wash removable covers if permitted by manufacturer’s instructions; dry inserts and shells until bone-dry. Store in breathable bins or vented closets with moisture absorbers. Never seal cushions in plastic, as condensation is the enemy. Label bins by set so spring setup is fast.

Your Storm-Ready Storage Checklist

Before any high-wind advisory:

  • Bring in cushions, umbrellas, lightweight side tables, and tabletop heaters.
  • Secure covers so they can’t billow.
  • Stage a “storm stack” location (garage/shed) for quick moves.
  • Photograph your setup for insurance records after major weather.

If You’re Storing Outdoors All Winter

Some Halifax homeowners lack storage space to keep all their backyarding essentials anywhere but the backyard. That’s okay, you just need to take a few extra steps to ensure everything stays safe.

Clean, dry, elevate, and cover as above. After the first significant rain, check for trapped moisture and re-vent as needed. Consider hard covers for tabletops in exposed, ocean-facing yards and apply a silicone-based protectant to hardware.

How to Keep the Patio in Play After Frost

You don’t have to pack everything away at once. Keep one seating zone active with a fire table or electric/infrared patio heater, and rotate pieces under cover between uses. A small, weather-resistant sideboard or deck box simplifies nightly cushion storage when showers are in the forecast.
